Activities and Tips for Kids

playdough

Make Playdough

The benefits of playdough go far beyond keeping your child busy. It teaches them fine motor skills, hand strengthening by pushing and pulling and the texture of the playdough also stimulates their tactile senses. You can even add scent to your recipe to stimulate their smell.

Try the playdough recipe below

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
Add food coloring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients
Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
Add the glycerine (optional)
Add a nontoxic scent such as vanilla
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!
If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right

Cool Kids Know the Pool Rules

Always have an adult nearby. Even if you are a great swimmer, you never know when you might need help.

Always check the water depth. You don't want to get hurt diving in water that is too shallow.

Always wear sunscreen. Without it, you could end up with painful sunburn.

No running! You could trip or slip - hurting yourself or others.

Secure all gates with locks. The best gates are self-closing & self-latching. Position latches well out of the reach of children. Install a gate alarm that will alert you inside the house if the gate is opened.

Install a pool gate. Experts recommend a fence of at least four feet tall, with slats close enough together that kids can't squeeze between them.

Stop swimming or boating as soon you hear a storm.

Always swim with a buddy!

How Many Things Can You Spy?

Solar Pizza Oven

Build a Solar Oven

This project is fairly easy and older kids can do most of the steps themselves. Just have an adult use a craft knife or scissors to cut the solar oven door.

  1. Cut the "oven door" flap on the box. The size depends on what you are cooking
and how much access you need.
  2. Decorate your solar oven with sharpies. (This is a fun optional step)
  3. Glue black construction paper to the inside bottom of the box. The black will
    absorb the heat.
  4. Glue aluminum foil to the inside of the door. The foil reflects the sun into the
    oven.
  5. Tape a plastic covering over the opening of the door. This will allow the air
inside to heat up and keep it trapped inside the box.
  6. Add Graham Crackers, marshmallow and chocolate inside the oven. Place your
oven outside in the sun. Tape a wooden skewer to prop the lid open at a ideal
    angle.
  7. The chocolate will begin to melt first, but wait for marshmallow to puff up. Then
    Enjoy!**
